7 Days in Busan : Day 5

Heart Me!
Comment

Today we had a real good breakfast, before visiting a beautiful seaside church.

More crabs, at least this time it is not raw.

And, a great night with good coffee, cake and wines.

Affordable, hearty, satisfying breakfast

Yeongja Myeonok 3 (영자면옥 3호점) store front

I always made myself to try something closeby to where I stay because you know, eat like a local while travelling. Besides, they usually cost a lot less.

So after passing by this shop Yeongja Myeonok 3 (영자면옥 3호점) a few times along with some online research, I'm determined to try it. They are mainly selling Knife Cut Noodle Soup or Kalguksu (칼국수), and they caught my attention for good.

This is by far the most heart warming customer service I've received here.

Kalguksu (칼국수) + Mandu (만두) set for takeout 5,500 won ($4.62)

The cook asked if I am staying nearby or further away so they can prep the noodle to the right consistency for my takeout. And it went without saying, this simple bowl of noodles and their mandu (만두) were cooked to perfection and tasted sooooo good.

Not real but real-ly nice.

I don't think this is a real church by any means. It is actually quite small, and now they have tiny a museum or exhibition of some sort going on inside.

But, a church by the sea it is something really beautiful to look at and photograph.

If you happen to be nearby Gijang Station (기장역), maybe for some seafood or visiting the surrounding cafes, do drop by and take a look!

You can reach here by bus Gijanggun 6 (기장군 6) from a stop not far away from Gijang Station (기장역) in 40 minutes or so. Take the same bus back to town or order a taxi using Kakao T if you've wandered too far off like we did.

Walkaround Mer de Cour (메르데쿠르)

OK, say if you are already here to visit the church, why not make yourself to take another 20 plus minutes walk to the nearby cafes?

Walking by the seaside to Mer de Cour (메르데쿠르)

It is a rewarding experiece to walk all the way here, sipping coffee in a big modern mansion cafe by the sea.

They have this Tangerine Latte (덴저린 라떼) which we think is a must order. It felt like a tangerine cookie is melting in your mouth. Sweet to the tongue but doesn't taste sugary sweet.

Onion Sausage Croissant (어니언 소시지 크로와상) has a potato salad alike filling, but is made with onion in the croissant, topped with a chicken frankfurter.

Going back to town

To go back to town, I will recommend getting a taxi by using Kakao T or you can probably ask a staff to help you make a call. Cost for a taxi ride back to town is about 5,000 won ($4.20). Or, you can walk all the way back to the church and take the same bus where you came.

Only for crab lovers.

Gijang Crab Market (기장 대게시장)

Crabs, crabs everywhere

There are many many restaurants and stalls selling crabs and other types of seafood along this stretch of the street.

You will see salespersons that can speak different languages who will bring you to the crab selling stalls. And after selecting your crab, you will be guided to their selected restaurant. Most, if not all of them will try to be really persuasive.

The crab sellers will recommend you which type of crab is best depending on their catch and season. And they will usually offer you a discount after weighing the selection. Or try bargaining with them, if you are good at it.

Looking around Gijang Crab Market (기장 대게시장)

I'm here specifically for the Crab Fried Rice.

Kalguksu (칼국수) + Mandu (만두) set for takeout 5,500 won ($4.62)

The crab price you see upfront is not the only price you pay for in the restaurant. There will be a cover charge per person dining in, which usually cost 3,000 won ($2.52) each. Basic charges will get you all the usual, and sometimes unusual side dishes / Banchan (반찬), towels and drinking water.

And for any other additional order such as the Fried Rice (볶음밥) will cost extra, roughly 3,000 won ($2.52). Prices do vary from restaurant to restaurant. But the crab fried rice in these restaurants, you just can't get it anywhere else.

You can have the crab cut up for free - easier to be eaten or leave it as it is. You can also carefully leave the crab body (with its the goodness inside) aside and order the fried rice at a later time.

The coffee they serve in this shop is fairly decent but their breads, cakes and pastries are where they stand out. You can take a look at their Instagram account for some ideas.

Coffee shop itself is quite spacious I must say, with a rooftop balcony that is very well decked out.

If you have a thing for breads, cakes and pastries, you need to drop by!

Milky Way (은하수방) from Sheep Coffee (쉽커피)

I was here for their Milky Way (은하수방). It is like a Pandoro cake with the cream in a cylinder on top. Pretty much just to watch the action of cream flowing out of the tube. But surprisingly, the combination was really good and not overly sweet.

Cutting into the Milky Way (은하수방)

One thing I notice is that they serve more breads earlier in the day and more cakes later in the afternoon, but I'm not 100% certain about this. Just a good note to keep in mind if case if you are coming for one or the other.

Late night supper in South Korea

There's always time at night where you will be back early and is hungry at night even travelling abroad. So remember to checkout their local supermarket while you're on your way home.

Get yourself some ready made food, microwavable meals, and how can we forget - liquor!

Get yourself cheap wines and food by looking out for discounted offers at the supermarket.

If wines are not cheap or maybe it does not suit your palate, try their local produce such as soju and beers, and of course any non-alcoholic stuff (boo!). These items are always selling at a reasonably low price there.
